The state has had to take emergency measures to protect parts of the highway. The bypass extension also will provide an alternative route to Honoapiilani Highway, which has become dangerously close to the shoreline due to erosion and sea-level rise. The bypass extension is intended to alleviate current and projected congestion on Honoapiilani Highway, especially through Lahaina, the Transportation Department said. The phase will connect with Honoapiilani Highway past Launiupoko on the Lahaina-side of the old Olowalu landfill.
The next phase starts at the southeastern end of the last bypass phase at Hokiokio Road. The $38.6 million project, which includes design and construction, is projected to be completed by January 2018, the Transportation Department said.
